Distributor, franchise and wholesale territories open across north India

Exporting to United Kingdom

Britain has around one point nine million people of Indian origin and, unusually, a wholesale trade built specifically to serve them. Leicester, Southall, Wembley and Sparkbrook are not niche markets, they are established grocery economies with their own cash and carry networks. There is no pre-market approval for a soft drink here, which makes the UK the fastest Western market to enter and the right place to prove the export label works.

Clearing customs in United Kingdom

Everything below is the honest version. We would rather lose an enquiry now than lose a container at the port later.

Who decides

Food Standards Agency and the importing local authority. No product registration and no pre-approval. The importer becomes the responsible food business operator and carries the legal duty for the label being correct. That shifts the burden onto your buyer, which is exactly why your buyer will want the label right before he commits.

What you must hold

  • Importer registered as a food business with their local authority
  • Certificate of origin and commercial invoice
  • Composition and additive declaration for the importer’s due diligence file
  • A UK or Northern Ireland address printed on the label as responsible operator

How the label changes

  • Nutrition declaration per 100 ml in the British format
  • Allergen information and quantitative ingredient declaration
  • Best before date, batch code and metric net content
  • A responsible food business address inside the UK
  • Warning statement required for certain permitted colours — this one decides whether the current recipe travels as-is

Duty, excise and levy

Import duty on soft drinks is modest. The number that actually matters is the soft drinks industry levy, charged per litre in bands based on sugar per 100 ml. Where a recipe falls relative to the band threshold can change the landed cost more than the freight does, and reformulating downward is sometimes cheaper than paying it.

Verify current levy bands and thresholds with HMRC before quoting.

The one thing that catches people out

The additive warning statement. One of the permitted colours in the domestic recipe triggers a mandatory advisory line about children on British labels. It is legal to sell, but no serious retailer wants that sentence on a shelf-facing pack. Plan a natural colour variant for this market before you plan the first container.

Who buys this in United Kingdom

A settled, second and third generation market that buys on nostalgia and, increasingly, a non-Indian audience buying the bottle because it is unusual.

Zeros Classic Lemon Goli Soda 300 ml marble bottle for export to United Kingdom

What you are importing

A 300 ml lemon soda in a codd-neck glass bottle sealed by a marble — the same bottle sold worldwide as ramune, made in India where it has been called goli soda for a century. 12 bottles per crate, 6 months shelf life, produced under FSSAI licence 20926012000879.

It is not a new flavour asking a shopper to take a risk. It is a format that already sells in United Kingdom, in a version nobody there is currently supplying.

Trade clusters we quote to

Where the buying actually happens in United Kingdom, and how stock reaches each one.

London

Southall and Wembley are the two densest Indian grocery streets in Europe, and both have their own cash and carry supply behind them. Nothing else in Britain moves at this speed.

Southall · Wembley · Tooting · Ilford · East Ham — arriving through London Gateway or Felixstowe.

Leicester

Belgrave Road is the highest concentration of Indian retail per square mile anywhere in Britain, and Leicester wholesalers supply well beyond the city. Landing Leicester lands the East Midlands.

Belgrave Road · Melton Road · Narborough Road — arriving through Felixstowe.

Birmingham

Sparkbrook and Soho Road anchor a trade that serves the whole West Midlands, and Birmingham’s restaurant density gives a second channel that most cities do not have.

Sparkbrook · Soho Road · Alum Rock · Ladypool Road — arriving through Southampton or Felixstowe.

Manchester

The Cheetham Hill wholesale belt supplies independent retail across the north of England. A single account here reaches shops in five counties.

Cheetham Hill · Rusholme · Longsight — arriving through Liverpool or Felixstowe.

Glasgow

Scotland is served by a small number of wholesalers with very wide reach, and Glasgow holds most of them. Underserved relative to its size because English distributors rarely route this far north.

Pollokshields · Woodlands · Govanhill — arriving through Grangemouth or Felixstowe.

Importing into United Kingdom

Can you export goli soda to United Kingdom?

Yes. Sagar Beverages produces Zeros Classic Lemon Goli Soda under FSSAI licence 20926012000879 at our plant in Amb, Himachal Pradesh, and we ship to United Kingdom through Felixstowe. Roughly 22 to 30 days from Nhava Sheva or Mundra once the container sails. Send an enquiry and we will come back with a costed offer, the certification position and a realistic first shipment date.

What certification do I need to import your drinks into United Kingdom?

No product registration and no pre-approval. The importer becomes the responsible food business operator and carries the legal duty for the label being correct. That shifts the burden onto your buyer, which is exactly why your buyer will want the label right before he commits. In practice you will need: Importer registered as a food business with their local authority; Certificate of origin and commercial invoice; Composition and additive declaration for the importer’s due diligence file; A UK or Northern Ireland address printed on the label as responsible operator. We supply the producer-side documentation for all of it. The importer-side registrations sit with you, and we will tell you plainly which is which before you spend anything.

What is the minimum order for United Kingdom?

We quote from one 20ft container as a standard first order, which is the point where sea freight per case stops being the dominant cost. Smaller trial quantities are possible by consolidation for buyers who want to test the market first. Tell us the volume you have in mind and we will tell you honestly whether it works.

Do you change the label for United Kingdom?

Yes, and it is not optional. Nutrition declaration per 100 ml in the British format is required, along with the rest of the market's mandatory information. We produce a United Kingdom-specific artwork rather than stickering an Indian label, because stickered labels get rejected and they look exactly as cheap as they are.

What is the hardest part of importing this into United Kingdom?

The additive warning statement. One of the permitted colours in the domestic recipe triggers a mandatory advisory line about children on British labels. It is legal to sell, but no serious retailer wants that sentence on a shelf-facing pack. Plan a natural colour variant for this market before you plan the first container.

How long have you been manufacturing?

Since 1984. Over forty years making soda in north India, almost all of it in the unorganised trade where there are no contracts and no guaranteed shelf space — a shop reorders because the last case sold, or it does not. For a buyer in United Kingdom the relevant point is continuity: the risk in a first container is whether the supplier is still there for the fourth.

Can you produce under our own brand instead?

Yes. The codd-neck marble bottle is the part almost nobody else can supply, and we run it as private label as readily as we run it as Zeros. Read the private label page, or say so on the enquiry form and we will quote it that way.
